Dates calculated from the legal rules
The Workplace Relations Commission list does not cover this year yet. These dates are worked out from the Act and the statutory instrument, with Easter Monday taken from the date of Easter, and will be checked against the official list once it covers the year.
Christmas Day joins the Monday holidays in 2028, bringing the Monday total to seven out of ten public holidays. This leap year's only public holiday on a weekend day is New Year's Day, a Saturday. Every public holiday appears with its weekday in the table. The dates are worked out from the Act and the statutory instrument and labelled accordingly, because the Workplace Relations Commission's printed list does not yet extend to this year.

Public holidays at the weekend
A public holiday at the weekend does not automatically move to the next weekday or make that weekday a public holiday, though it may be a public holiday in its own right. The Workplace Relations Commission explains:
However, there is no legal entitlement to have the next working day off work.
- New Year's Day (Saturday 1 January 2028) falls at the weekend; the next weekday, , is not a public holiday.

How the holidays fall in 2028
New Year's Day falls on a Saturday during the school Christmas break. St Patrick's Day is a Friday, and Easter Monday falls in mid-April during the school Easter holidays. Good Friday is not a public holiday. The year ends with Christmas Day on a Monday and St Stephen's Day on a Tuesday, both during the next school Christmas break.
A Tuesday start to February puts St Brigid's Day on the following Monday, the latest position the rule allows. May, by contrast, begins on Monday, so its bank holiday coincides with the start of the month. The October bank holiday falls right at the end of the month. It opens the October mid-term week for the school year beginning that autumn, carrying that school break into November.
Easter 2028
Easter Monday, , is the public holiday (worked out from the date of Easter, which the circular's contingency Wednesday confirms). Good Friday, , is not (worked out from the date of Easter). Why Good Friday is not a bank holiday. School Easter holidays.
Where a bank holiday meets a school break
- October bank holiday, , falls in the October mid-term break of 2028/29.
Common questions
Why are there more Monday bank holidays this year?
Christmas Day falls on Monday 25 December 2028, bringing the Monday public holiday count to seven. Its weekday adds it to the holidays that already follow Monday-based rules.
Do the February and May holidays sit at the same point in their months?
St Brigid's Day falls on Monday 7 February 2028, while the May bank holiday is Monday 1 May 2028. February's holiday occupies the latest permitted Monday, whereas May's holiday coincides with the start of that month.
Does the late October bank holiday push the school break into November?
The October holiday falls on Monday 30 October 2028, with school mid-term starting on Monday 30 October 2028. That late Monday start carries the autumn closure through to a Friday in November.
