About the site
Mid-Term Ireland is an independent guide to Ireland's standardised school year and public holidays. It has no connection with the Department of Education and Youth, any school or any government body.
What the guide covers
The school calendar follows the Department of Education and Youth's circulars for the October mid-term break, Christmas, the February mid-term break and Easter. Primary and post-primary arrangements appear side by side so readers can see the differences specified in the circular.
Public holiday coverage follows the Organisation of Working Time Act and, for the February holiday, the relevant statutory instrument. The guide distinguishes these public holidays from the breaks set out in the standardised school year.
Summer holidays, the first day of the school year, a school's discretionary days and State examination dates are not shown. These dates are either outside the standardised arrangements or have not been collected for the site; the pages explain the gaps instead of estimating dates.
How dates are checked
Each school holiday date is copied from the official document, which is saved with its address and the day it was read. Before a date appears, a separate reviewer checks it a second time against the document text.
Where a circular prints only two dates, the site displays those two dates without expanding them into an assumed range. Public holiday dates for a year without a printed official list are derived from the rules in the law and labelled accordingly.
The documents used are listed below so readers can consult the source material. Reports of a mismatch are checked against the relevant source.
